What Is MRSA?

  • MRSA Stands Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is basically a sort of super staph infection. MRSA strikes people mostly in two forms. The first and most common is people in the healthcare or clinical environment. People who are hospitalized and have lowered immune systems or have had surgery recently and are in a weakened state from it. The second (and more troubling recently) occurs in perfectly healthy people, via contact. It can enter through your eyes, mouth, nose, etc. but most notably open wounds. Recently there is a nation wide epidemic of healthy people being infected from touching something with MRSA on it (public gyms, subways, schools, etc.) via an open wound. This will occur when a person transfers MRSA from what they touched to themselves by scratching a bug bite that is perhaps a bit open, picking at acne, or touching a cut.

Why Should I Be Concerned?

  • If you live in America, have a child in school, work in the healthcare field, live in a dense urban environment, use public transportation, use public indoor places, or engage in many other normal day to day activities you are at risk for being infected with MRSA!

Why Is MRSA So Bad?

  • MRSA is so bad because unlike traditional staph infections that have been around forever MRSA is highly resistant to antibiotics. If you become infected and don't notice or receive medical treatment right away you may quite easily lose the infected limb, or if left for too long die as it spreads to internal orgrans.

What Are The Symptoms Of MRSA?

  • It is important to catch MRSA as early as possible, as treatment consists of mostly keeping the wound clean and keeping your body strong while it heals. If you experience one or more of these symptoms you should contact your physician or otherwise seek medical attention:

Red Sores / Rash Around Cut For Prolonged Period Of Time

Wound Taking Unusually Long Time To Heal

Wound Seeping Puss / Infected Wound

Small Wounds Seeming To Grow Rather Than Heal

General MRSA Facts

  • MRSA Kills more people in the US than HIV / AIDS each year
  •
  • If all patients entering Hospitals / Clinical settings were screened, MRSA would be completely wiped out within 2 years
  •
  • People say MRSA only infects those in hospitals and is not a problem, however this has changed recently and outbreaks are being reported nationwide rather than simply in hospitals
